The recent military engagement over Kashmir by South Asia’s arch enemies saw India deploy its French and US weapons against Pakistan’s new range of sophisticated Chinese arms. In its first battlefield test against Western arms, Chinese weapons mostly hit the mark, sparking interest in some military circles and alarm in some capitals.

Tom Cruise returned to the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday for the global premiere of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”, which may or may not be the saga’s final episode, going full circle on a French connection that began three decades ago with a memorable first instalment starring Jean Reno and Emmanuelle Béart.

Near-shore fishing stocks in Thailand and Sri Lanka are increasingly depleted and more and more fishing boats are drawn to the remote, abundant waters of the Saya de Malha Bank. But for distant-water crews on the high seas, living conditions on board are often extremely challenging. Fishermen grapple with long sailing times, malnutrition and conflict on perilous journeys that sometimes end in death.

A study released on Wednesday investigating the gender gap in carbon emissions found that women in France emit 26 percent less carbon than men with their diet and transport choices. Researchers say household structure plays a “key role” in shaping the carbon footprint gap.

Once a favourite playground for Hollywood’s serial predator Harvey Weinstein, the glitzy French Riviera gathering is under pressure to fully embrace the belated #MeToo wave that has swept France’s film industry and brought down one of its most iconic faces, Gérard Depardieu.

In November 2022, a scientific expedition to the Saya de Malha Bank made an alarming discovery: the sharks that once inhabited the seagrass meadow are disappearing. Researchers say that Asian fishing boats who come to fish for tuna in these remote, abundant waters are also hunting and catching sharks in huge numbers.

The 78th Cannes Film Festival kicks off on Tuesday with a typically tantalising line-up of indie auteurs, Hollywood stars and the final instalment in Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible” saga. But US President Donald Trump’s threat of steep tariffs on foreign-made movies risks dominating conversations at the French Riviera gathering.

The Saya de Malha Bank in the heart of the Indian Ocean is home to one of the world's largest underwater seagrass beds. A veritable lung of the ocean, this little-known 40,000 km² territory captures CO2 35 times faster than a tropical forest, and provides a vital habitat for numerous marine species. But today this rare and precious ecosystem, mostly located in international waters, is being decimated by industrial fishing fleets.

Eighty years ago this week, as jubilant crowds in Europe celebrated the defeat of Nazi Germany, French forces launched a ferocious colonial crackdown in eastern Algeria where demonstrators had dared to raise the Algerian flag. The Sétif massacres would lead Algerian nationalists to embrace armed struggle, paving the way for the country’s gruesome war of independence. Long forgotten in France, the tragedy still poisons relations between the two countries.

Pope Leo XIV has been described as a potential bridge-builder for a divided Catholic Church, likely to pursue parts of his predecessor’s progressive agenda while reaching out to disgruntled conservatives. From his stance on women’s roles in the Church to his criticism of the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant policies, his past statements offer clues as to which way his papacy might lean.

World War II ended in Europe 80 years ago this Thursday, but the remains of German soldiers are still being found. As Germany's far-right AfD party rallies behind a broader effort to reframe national memory, the discoveries – and the German commission in charge of providing “dignified” burials for them – are reigniting questions around remembrance.

Propelled by nationalist rhetoric, rural discontent and a viral TikTok strategy, far-right leader George Simion won almost 41% in the first round of Romania’s re-run presidential vote on Sunday, setting up a decisive run-off with a pro-EU candidate that will determine the country’s democratic and geopolitical course.

Far-right nationalist George Simion secured an emphatic win in the first round of Romania’s presidential election on Sunday, nearly complete electoral data showed, months after an annulled vote plunged the European Union and NATO member country into turmoil. He is expected to face Bucharest's pro-EU mayor, Nicusor Dan, in a May 18 runoff.

A satirical drama providing rare insight into the everyday life of Riyadh’s working classes, Ali Kalthami’s debut feature “Night Courier” takes viewers on a journey across the Saudi capital’s rapidly changing urban landscape. It opens in French cinemas this week following a successful run in domestic theatres and on Netflix that has highlighted the growing ambitions of Saudi film.
