Fresh clashes erupted Wednesday between rival militias in the Libyan capital, just hours after officials declared the fighting over. The tensions underscores the fragility of the ceasefire and raises the specter of a broader conflict in the war-scarred nation.

As the UN Security Council prepares to vote on whether to renew the arms embargo on South Sudan at the end of this month, Amnesty International is warning of serious violations on the ground. Its new report points to illegal weapons transfers, fresh attacks on civilians, and Ugandan troops operating in the country without UN approval.

Four months after Goma was taken over by AFC/M23 rebels, some residents are showing signs of post-traumatic stress disorder. NGOs such as the Red Cross have set up counselling centres offering free and anonymous advice to support those in distress. Also, Tunisia has fallen 11 places on RSF's latest World Press Freedom Index, as repression of journalists reaches new heights. Amid this pressure on press freedom, some journalists are trying to resist. Plus a three-legged stool has been returned to Benin. It is the missing piece in a collection of 27 items from the country's cultural treasure, looted during colonial times and kept in a Finnish museum.

Mali’s ruling military junta on Tuesday dissolved all political parties and banned political gatherings, intensifying its grip on power amid growing opposition. Opposition groups, fearing the move, had formed a 100-party coalition in a rare act of defiance since the 2020 and 2021 coups that brought the military to power.

The White Afrikaners who have accepted resettlement in the United States did not face "any form of persecution" in South Africa, the foreign ministry said on Monday. The reaction came hours after a first group of 49 White South Africans flew out of Johannesburg following US President Donald Trump's offer to grant refugee status to them.

Eighty years ago this week, as jubilant crowds in Europe celebrated the defeat of Nazi Germany, French forces launched a ferocious colonial crackdown in eastern Algeria where demonstrators had dared to raise the Algerian flag. The Sétif massacres would lead Algerian nationalists to embrace armed struggle, paving the way for the country’s gruesome war of independence. Long forgotten in France, the tragedy still poisons relations between the two countries.

Despite ongoing peace talks, fighting continues in parts of DR Congo between local forces and Rwanda-backed M23 rebels. The M23 has taken control of much of the eastern part of DR Congo since January – its first major advance being the capture of Goma in North Kivu province. Award-winning photojournalist Hugh Kinsella Cunningham has been documenting these takeovers as well as their impact on civilians. Speaking on FRANCE 24's Perspective programme, he described how civilians were ordered by the rebels to leave displacement camps and return to their villages, which had been ravaged by fighting.

For the third day in a row, Port Sudan, once considered a rare safe zone in Sudan's civil war, has been rocked by drone attacks blamed on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The city, plunged into darkness by the latest attack, has become the de facto capital amid two years of brutal fighting between the RSF and the army. The conflict has created the world's worst humanitarian crisis. On Tuesday, Sudan's military-backed government cut ties with the UAE, which it accuses of supplying arms to the RSF, but both sides have been accused of atrocities throughout the war.

Nollywood – Nigerian cinema – is the world's second-largest film industry in terms of output and has evolved a great deal since emerging in the 1990s. However, it still faces challenges as a relatively young industry, including profitability. One of the international events helping to shine a spotlight on films made in Nigeria and other African countries is the NollywoodWeek Film Festival in Paris. As the twelfth edition gets underway this week, we speak to Serge Noukoué and Nadira Shakur, the event's founders. They tell us how Nollywood filmmakers are now "much more daring" and discuss how the industry is navigating the age of streaming.

In eastern Congo, where renewed fighting between government forces and the M23 rebel group rages on, a different kind of resistance is taking shape. In Bukavu — a city now under rebel occupation — artists are turning to paint and canvas to battle not just the trauma of war, but also the spread of dangerous misinformation. The head of one of the main relief agencies trying to help the people of Sudan says the situation in the country is the worst it has ever been. She says the month of April has been the bloodiest for civilians in the conflict so far, with over 500 people slaughtered in the North Darfur region alone following months of famine. Sudan is facing a continuing spike in violence in the devastating civil war that is now in its third year and has claimed tens of thousands of lives. In Perspective we spoke to Mathilde Vu, advocacy manager at the Norwegian Refugee Council.

Several African nations, including Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR), have turned to the Russian private military company Wagner for security support. In return, Wagner gains access to lucrative resources—rare minerals, precious metals, and gems like gold and diamonds—while also helping Russia circumvent international sanctions. For a closer look at Wagner's expanding footprint across the continent, FRANCE 24's Oliver Farry welcomes journalist Lou Osborne, a member of the "All Eyes on Wagner" investigative team.

Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have committed to drafting a peace agreement by May 2. But trust remains fragile. Militia groups who have been operating in the region are at the roots of some of that strain. Kigali continues to view the FDLR, the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, founded by Hutu extremists in the early 2000s, as a direct threat to its national security. While Kinshasa had once committed to dismantling the group, it now accuses Rwanda of using it as a pretext to justify backing the M23 rebels whose offensive in eastern DRC has already claimed thousands of lives since January. Rwanda wants to show it can manage this FDLR issue by reintegrating ex-fighters into society. FRANCE 24’s correspondent in Rwanda, Juliette Montilly, was given rare access to one of the country’s "Demobilisation and Reintegration Centres", where she was able to speak with former militiamen.
